I reviewed Kwik Stix solid tempera paint last year as part of the Homeschool Review Crew and we absolutely loved them. When I was contacted last month and asked if I was interested in reviewing their new product Thin Stix, I jumped at it. We’re still using and loving our Kwik Stix ten months later, but my bigger kids said more than once that they wished they were thinner, to make it easier to draw fine lines. These are just what they were asking for!
The Thin Stix are about 1/2″ in diameter – about half the diameter of the Kwik Stix, making it easier to draw a fine line. They are advertised on Amazon as “Mess Free Creativity with the NEW Kwik Stix Thin Stix Solid Tempera Paint. Uncap, Twist and Paint. No water needed. Dries in 90 seconds. Smaller Tip for Better Control than the original Kwik Stix.”
I gave them to all of my kids – as in, they arrived in the mail and my kids were all itching to try them out. My kids that appreciate them the most are 9, 8, 6, 5, and nearly 3. They were well received by all, and the larger, longer pen was easier to maneuver for my older kids. It writes more like a full size pen, whereas the Kwik Stix original sticks are shorter and fatter. I think I prefer the shorter Kwik Stix for my littles – which seems to be exactly who those are geared for. My bigger kids all preferred the Thin Stix – making the Pencil Grip, Inc. completely accurate in their products and age range expectations.
Elliot, my nearly three year old, even demonstrated one of my favorite parts of both the Kwik Stix and the Thin Stix, coloring on the table in her efforts to smile and color at the same time. It wipes off of the table effortlessly, no matter how long it’s been on there. I’ve caught it hours later and it still isn’t difficult to clean off. For this mother of many, that’s a huge win!
Thin Stix’ tips aren’t pencil thin, but they are far easier to draw more precisely than the Kwik Stix. With such fuss free painting, I’ve given my kids free reign with them and getting to use them whenever they wish – something I would never do with traditional paints. The colors are as vibrant as traditional paint, but they make little to no mess. We’ve even taken them in the car on road trips without catastrophe. They are one of my very favorite finds I’ve been introduced to in the world of reviewing. I can recommend them wholeheartedly – especially if you, like me, cringe at the mess that crafts can make. These don’t – and I’ve even had to wash them off my tile floor when Miss Elliot, once again, got vigorous in her “painting”. No problem! I was afraid when the Kwik Stix arrived last year that they would have a short life, especially when I saw how my children loved to cover the entire page with the bright paint. I’ve had one dry out and become unusable after a ridiculous amount of time uncapped (think weeks) and one just emptied from sheer use. The others still work as great as the day they arrived. Elliot especially has used them on an at least weekly basis. They hold up.
Kwik Stix Thin Stix are available on Amazon here. We love them!
