Project: boys room.

June 18, 2018 by Adrienne

A couple days ago, I was looking at the drop cloth  room divider that makes up a wall of the living room and creates a bedroom for the boys. I’ve hated it for, oh, all six years it’s been there. But it worked. I decided to make a new one. Better. Prettier. Less… temporary. Since it’s obviously not temporary.

So I’ve been surfing Pinterest and Google and trying to find something far more attractive. Turns out, lots of people do this. They just don’t do it with strips of plywood, screws, and painted-on drop cloths. Imagine that.

So I figured out a wire/cafe clips/turnbuckle system and purchased supplies. Many thanks to my dear husband for helping with that process. And I looked for clearances paint on a whim. Because… eh, it could use some sprucing up in there. And apparently I was feeling energetic. I found a $50 gallon of blue paint for $9. Works for me.

So I got up this morning, looked at that can of paint, and dove in. The boys bedroom houses the schoolbooks, the kids books, and the coloring books. And about 26,498 bb gun and airsoft bb’s – most of which were not in their container, but were instead hiding in every corner and cranny and everywhere under the bed. We went to work. We shuffled, rearranged, scrubbed, and painted from 8:30 am to 9:20 pm. I stopped to scarf lunch down in there and other than that, took no breaks.

It. Is. Done. Hallelujah. The walls are beautiful and blue instead of a green that refused to perk up no matter how much I scrubbed. I took three laundry baskets of books out of there to donate or sell. The bookshelves have room to spare. Everything is dusted and scrubbed and tidy as can be. The bed got moved to a new spot, and the floor got mopped.

I still don’t have a divider solution figured out completely. Headed to town tomorrow for fabric or curtains or ideas of what I want to order online. Funny that I still don’t have that after the starting project was that in the first place. But the room looks amazing. Clean. Fresh. The boys are thrilled. My clearance paint was precisely what they’d have chosen, they’re certain. Even Stellan came to thank me for painting his walls blue.

Once I’m completely done, I’ll take photos. The boys were still working on their beds and closet cleaning when I sent them to bed. I still plan to paint their closet and the adjacent hall tomorrow. Fresh and clean does my heart good.

But now, I’m exhausted.

You accomplished a lot it seems. I know you will find something at the fabric store and you will make it very attractive. You have a talent for that. Can’t wait to see pics. I am sure you were very exhausted.

So glad you got the cleaning and painting part of it done. It always turns into more work than we plan on, but well worth the effort. Good luck with the next stage of the project. I know you’ll do yourself proud.

Yes, photos please!!! I love house-makeover projects because no matter what, you always feel so much better after the job is done…I never realized the living room worked double duty as the boys’ room, though. That’s quite a challenge.
