Review: Elisha Press

February 11, 2016 by Adrienne

When I was approached to review the latest title, Susanna, Don’t You Cry, by Zachary McIntire and published by Elisha Press, I jumped at it. Elisha Press has published several of my girls’ favorite books yet, and I anticipated this one to rank right up there with the others.

I started reading, but I only make it a chapter or two before I’m falling at this season on life. Liberty, on the other hand, went on and on and on about the story. I had to slow her down so I could find out what happens on my own!

Long story short, this one now tops her list of favorites. Susanna, Don’t You Cry is suggested for ages 12 and older due to discussions of drugs and divorce, so Liberty, age 12, and I were the only ones who read this. Eden’s just turned 11 and is likely ready for it, but she didn’t get her chance yet.  A story of broken lives, soiled by sin, hate, suffering the effects of divorce and selfish living, Susanna Don’t You Cry clearly speaks of salvation through faith, redemption, healing, forgiveness, and righting wrongs.

It was a captivating tale, though it started in a frustrating flurry of details designed to get all the need-to-know info spewed so that the story could begin. It was a lesson in keeping with it until things picked up, and I’m glad I did – it was well worth perseverance. I asked Liberty her thoughts on the beginning and she had no such thoughts, not noticing the shift in the book where it finished details and got to the meat of the story. Liberty just loved the whole story. This is the first title by Zachary McIntire and both Liberty and I hope to read more from him in the future.

I’m thrilled to add this title to my book collection. I’m so thankful for publishers like Elisha Press who strive to publish wholesome, thought provoking, gospel-centered fiction that point to Christ. My girls have read and reread many of their books, we’ve done some as read alouds, and have always been thrilled with the opportunity to read and review their work.
