Sterling had a painful run in with a new lawn mower engine this week. He dropped the 130 pound engine on his foot and broke his fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot. He’s on crutches for three weeks, then likely a walking boot for another three. To say he’s feeling limited by this is an understatement. 17 year olds don’t slow down well. He can drive my van, but not his manual transmission truck. He was scaling the tree fort with mostly upper body strength and his knee 16 hours later. Dude. Go take a nap.
I bought myself a bike and a trailer to pull Lachlan in so that we can go on the Katy trail again. Today we went out in it and Lach and Sterling rode in it. Let me tell you, that was less than fun. Pulling a teen boy in that thing was not for the faint of heart. Ruby and Charlie and I all kept trading off. We won’t do it again. Gimpy can stay home. My thighs will be grumpy all week.
My bus route is over since school is out. It’s crazy and nice and weird to be home again. I’m doing bookkeeping for an online company but less hours until I’m better trained. I’ve gotten to take kids to the park and for walks and we have made popsicles and marinated big bags of meat for summer suppers. It’s the first time we’ve had things this “normal” since summer of 2020. It’s been a rough set of years. I hope this can continue.
Being home has induced a boot camp of sorts to get some behavior in line with children. It’s not for the faint of heart. I find myself searching for creative consequences and frustrated that we’re here. It always ebbs and flows – from my own consistency more than anything. The realization that I’ve slacked off is humbling.
Falcon is growing big and starting to smile. He visits often and I swear he snuggles in. We have an understanding. This grandma gig is pretty great.
Blaine continues to work away from home and come here on the weekends. His list of jobs on the house is getting shorter, but it’s not done. The season of living apart and so much unsettled is hard.

Oh no! I sure hate Sterling has broken a bone. Bless his heart! I can not believe he is 17.
Nice you are home at least.
Any prospects or a place to move?
Adrienne says
Just working through projects on the house before we can list it for sale. Once it’s listed we’ll look in earnest for a place to buy.
Carl Davis says
Sounds like you are no longer planning on moving to Shannon County, MO or have delayed it?
Adrienne says
We’re moving once the house sells. For now the house is in various stages of remodel.
